Tokyo Calling Episode 101

If all the recent junk-emails about bigger being better are to be believed, then this 71 minute bait-and-switch cast will be the best episode ever. What was originally intended as a response to Timo's comment on episode 99, wound up being something entirely different. I'll leave the final judgement to you: the kind listener.
| Element | Time |
|---|---|
| Prologue | 0:00-5:48 |
| Bait & Switch in Suidobashi | 6:27-9:58 |
| Segment 1 at Yasukuni | 10:15-30:56 |
| Segments 2 & 3 at Yasukuni | 32:00-45:29 |
| WBAI's Bob Fasse Show with Bob Dylan | 45:29-48:08 |
| Segment 4 at the ironing board | 48:08-71:11 |

Scott - In your study of Dylan, I hope that you can track down a copy of the bootleg albums. There are two that I know of; one is a double album and the other a single. You should also look for the Traveling Wilburys. A little google/wikipedia time will point you in the proper direction.
Best regards and thank you so much for the work.

I really learned a lot about you with this podcast. It seems you really worked hard on this one and I for one really appreciate it.
I always found that the fundimentalists who use fear to get their message through are some of the worst human beings alive. You gave that guy more time than he would get from me. Although I may have publicly berated him!
I get why you didn't touch the guy in the subway. I don't think I would have either. It's human nature . Of course there will always be people who want to help, but more often than not there will be people who will be worried about the guy's reaction if he is touched. Sadly, that's the way things are. In Helsinki, Auckland, Tokyo.. you name it.

Dave: thanks for the Dylan pointers. I spent a couple of hours watching YouTubes videos of him performing - there are many there.
Christopher: thanks for identifying the track. Incidently, I just discovered the final number is by Kanye West. Who's he?
San: as always, thanks! I greatly enjoyed putting this episode together (yes, it did involve some "heavy lifting"). Hopefully, my own sense of enjoyment comes through in listening.

Kayne West, rapper and musician that first debuted in 2004. Rose to particular prominence after Katrina saying Pres. Bush didn't like black people. Interestingly, his last single "Stronger" sampled "Harder, Faster, Better, Stronger" by Daft Punk, also from the album Discovery.
It's always interesting listening to you talk about Eugene, since that's all local to me. (I know exactly where the record store you mentioned in the podcast is).

While listening to this episode, I was reminded by you about the Brezsny horoscopes. I too am an Aquarius, and since you decided not to read this week's horoscope on the show, I had to check it out for myself. I'm not sure if I should feel worried, or excited! Brezsny wrote, "Seemingly small events that last a short time will yield momentous consequences." This can mean one of two things. I will spend $1, and win the lottery, or something a lot more negative might happen... yikes! I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Or maybe I shouldn't.

Great to see/hear you are still pumping out the great podcasts!

Thanks everyone for the comments. Question for Bryan if you happen to come back: What's the name of the record store across from the Post office on Willamette? I think it's half-a-block up from Smith Family Book Store. Do they have a URL?
thanks

this episode was great scott, i for one would love to hear more about this 'foreigner question'. it's so difficult to get this point across, considering how complex the issue is. i've thought about this a lot since arriving here, and you'd probably need to give several episodes just to this one topic.
sorry about the chess taking up TC-creation-time, it was a great game though :)
don't let stand-off-ish comments get you down, we're all friends here. i think we're all just trying to figure things out.

Scott, awesome episode, as always. Loved the multiple segments. The guy that you ran into with the literature is with "The Family", the latest incantation of "Children of God" a cult that grew out of the "Jesus Freak" hippie movement of the 1960s/70s. The original bunch was notable for their practice of using young women to lure converts to God by having sex with them, an odd supposition, at least. For more, see Wikipedia
