Calling Tokyo Calling 002
With some reluctance, I post this second installment of Calling Tokyo Calling. Recorded last Friday night, I'm somewhat embarrassed with how frantic I sounded. I was really quite nervous and talked far longer than intended before bringing callers into the conversation. This whole experience truly is a work in progress.
Fortunately Christopher and San came to my rescue and provided lively conversation. Thanks to both of them. Also thanks to the folks in the chat room who waited patiently to enter the discussion. Sadly, the TalkShoe session ended when I stopped recording at the 30 minute mark. Sorry guys.
Next week, I promise to limit the monolog section to under 10 minutes. The most exciting aspect of TalkShoe for me is getting to bring you into the conversation. The next episode is scheduled for Friday, June 1st at 9:15 EDT. Christopher has graciously offered to be a featured guest.
He will share his recent experiences with cell phones in Japan. I know I have some questions for him. Hopefully some of you do as will and will be able to join us. Talk to you then.

It was a joy to be a part of it, even if I wasn't speaking. Now you know what I sound like.

Oh yeah. Loved the Dr. Who reference. I don't feel so alone anymore.

Im listening closely to these experiments with TalkSHoe and asking myself what value can be found in it. Thus far it has been sufficiently interesting... but in the longterm I think talkshoe is not really onto anything hugely fantastic. Making a podcast back into a live radio program kills half of what makes a podcast great.. the lack of time constraint. I understand the benefit of live direct interaction.. but overtime I wonder if it wont be the same group of listener-guests in the chat room... at that point it becomes just like a podcast hosted by a group of people who talk about whatever they want.
Anyway beyond any of this Im glad youre enjoying it and Ill certainly be listening to see how it all unfolds.

Matt: It was great to talk to you on the post episode wrap-up party last week. I was interested to hear that your interested in Japan was sparked by the experience of having a Japanese kid stay with your family on a homestay.
Homestay is an interesting topic and one I'd like to devote a segment of a future Calling Tokyo Calling to. Would you be willing to sit in a featured guest for this?
BTW, there is at least one TalkShoe show dedicate to Dr. Who - might wanna check it out.
BicycleMark: I fully concur with your reservations about potential downside of TalkShoe becoming nothing more than a digital version of a gang of regulars shooting the breeze around the pickle barrel at the general store. Still, it could be interesting and ought be considered as another medium of communication in this rapidly evolving space we call the net.
Ultimately the success or failure of any shoe depends on the entertainment value of the host and the quality of the guests. There's no doubt that Calling Tokyo Calling has a long way to go in overcoming the shortcomings of that first variable. As for the second variable, care to stop by as a featured guest and tell us about Citizen Journalism? I'd be much obliged.
